Event Description
Beading a Nyonya Story: A Journey into Kasut Manek
A heritage-rich workshop where participants will learn the delicate art of Nyonya beading, a traditional craft unique to the Peranakan Chinese community. Using fine glass beads and authentic techniques, each participant will begin their own kasut manek (beaded slipper) motif—typically a vibrant floral pattern that symbolises love, virtue, and feminine grace.
In traditional Peranakan households, a Nyonya’s beadwork was more than decorative—it was a silent testament to her patience, skill, and suitability as a wife, with her craftsmanship often influencing the prospects of her marriage.
